Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based therapy . It aims to support people, allowing them to improve and maintain overall well-being and focusing on their mental health.
A registered Psychotherapist can work with a variety of people including individuals, couples and families.
It is common for an individual to seek the support of a psychotherapist when they want to manage thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are affecting their lives negatively.
A Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario is a qualified professional who offers competent, ethical and confidential quality care and is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario (CRPO).
A psychotherapist can provide support to individuals experiencing a wide range of issues, from depression and low self-esteem to anxiety and family disputes. In general, any individual can benefit from psychotherapy in order to overcome difficulties they may experience at any point in their lives.
One of the aims of psychotherapy is to allow the individual to cope with challenging situations in an adaptive manner. This is often done by exploring the client's thought patterns and learning ways to reframe their thoughts and perceptions.
Psychotherapy is sometimes called a "talking treatment" because it uses talking, rather than medication.
Psychotherapy is usually client centered and may last for a few sessions or extend to several months or years. Sessions are usually for 1 hour, once a week, and typically follow a structured process to address the client’s goals.
The following feelings are signs that an individual might benefit from this type of therapy:
· Overwhelming feelings of sadness, helplessness, worry or fear.
· An inability to cope with everyday problems.
· Difficulty concentrating on work or studies.
· Feelings of anger and frustration on a regular basis.
· A sense that problems never improve, despite trying to overcome them
Currently OHIP does not cover services provided by psychotherapists. You may have an employee health care plan that has coverage for psychotherapy services, look under Registered Psychotherapist. If you are not sure you are covered, please check with your insurance carrier or with your employer. Please feel free to contact us for more support if needed
Psychotherapy is more effective than most medical treatments and has lesser side-effects. (Chiles, Lambert, & Hatch, 1999; Kraft, Puschner, Lambert, & Kordy, 2006)
A mental health professional may provide a fresh perspective on an issue. They can give people a better understanding of their own emotions. Therapists can also teach communication skills to convey those emotions. Therapy can promote one’s self-esteem, relationships, and outlook on life. www.goodtherapy.org
Studies show that the average treated person is better off than 80% of those who did not receive treatment (Miller, Hubble, Chow, & Seidel, 2013; Wampold & Imel, 2015)
